Historic Media, Pennsylvania

Media is a historic borough in southeastern Pennsylvania. It is the county seat of Delaware County. Media was settled around 1681. Much of the land in the area was purchased from William Penn. A small village, known originally as "Providence" in the colonial era, grew into the bustling town of Media.

The Delaware County Courthouse on Front Street is an impressive and beautiful building. The first portion of it was built in 1851 and consisted of only one courtroom. It has since been significantly expanded in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the notable Americans who have spoken from the Courthouse steps are President Ronald Reagan and famed orator William Jennings Bryan.

Media also played a role in the Underground Railroad. Slaves were helped north and directed through the area to escape bondage. The congregation of Providence Friends Meeting House on Providence Road were known to be active in the Underground Railroad.

There are many restaurants, shops, entertainment and activities in Media that will charm visitors to this historic area.
