An overnight head-on collision in Montco leaves four injured

It was reported that a two-car head-on collision in Montco on DeKalb Pike near Swedesford Road occurred this past weekend. According to an article posted by ABC, a southbound Hyundai, operated by Jason Durrell of West Chester, collided with a northbound Kia occupied by a Chalfont couple. The occupants of the Hyundai were taken to Abington Hospital for treatment.  The occupants of the Kia were reportedly taken to Lansdale Hospital.

The details of any injuries suffered were not reported.  Hopefully, those in the crash did not suffer serious injuries.

What is a head-on collision?

A head-on collision occurs when two vehicles are traveling in opposite directions on the same road and crash into each other. The crash involves the front of one vehicle colliding with the front of the other vehicle.

Head-on collisions can be deadly. This is especially true in high-speed collisions. This can also be true in situations when a larger vehicle, like a truck, strikes a smaller vehicle like a car.

Head-on collision accidents

Head-on collisions are common. In 2018, there were 5,084 reported head-on collision crashes. Front-end collisions represented about 4% of the total vehicle crashes in the state.

This means that on an average day in 2018, there were approximately 14 head-on collisions on Pennsylvania's roads.

Younger drivers were more likely to be involved in head-on collisions than older drivers. The age group of 16-21 years of age were involved in 1,208 reported head-on crashes in 2018.

By contrast, drivers between the ages of 65-74 were involved in 757 head-on crashes. Drivers over the age of 75 were involved in 454 head-on collisions.

Causes of head-on collisions

Head-on collisions can occur for many reasons. Some of the more common causes include:

  • drunk driving
  • distracted driving
  • cell phone use
  • slippery conditions, such as ice or snow
  • hydroplaning
  • lack of visibility, due to weather
  • falling asleep behind the wheel
